ICU GROUP SUBSIDIARY MS SOCIAL PROJECT LLC TO BUILD INNOVATIVE RECYCLING PLANT IN UKRAINE

MS Social Project LLC, a subsidiary of ICU Group, is pleased to announce an investment in the largest solid household waste (SHW) recycling plant in Ukraine. The plant will be built in Zhytomyr and designed to meet the European Union environmental safely standards and requirements. The total investment in the project will be between 7 to 10 million euros.

The plant will incorporate the latest technology for recycling solid household waste, which is ecologically safe, emission free and successfully tested in many European countries. With its own sewage treatment system, the plant is expected to process about 82,000 tons of waste annually. The level of processing for this technology will reach 85-95%. It will produce secondary raw materials including alternative Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) for cement plants, and compost from the organic portion of solid waste. All products produced will be reused, in keeping with the concept of a continuous-cycle economy.

“With this investment we are introducing innovative waste recycling technology to Ukraine, which has already proven its effectiveness in other European countries. After the implementation of the project in Zhytomyr, we are considering the possibility of also building plants in other cities across Ukraine. For us, this is not only good business, but also an important social project aimed at improving the environmental crisis in the country,” said Konstantin Stetsenko, Managing Partner, ICU.

After obtaining permits, the plant is expected to take one year to build. The plant will work in two shifts, and employ 150 people.

“There is a huge waste processing problem in Zhytomyr, as well as in other Ukrainian cities. We fully support this project, and extremely pleased that our city had been chosen for its implementation. The new plant will provide an efficient, sustainable way of processing household waste instead of burying it in landfills, which adds to the pollution in the region. Furthermore, this project is very important in terms of creating new jobs in the local area, as well as bringing in additional budget revenues,” said Sergey Sukhomlyn, the Mayor of Zhytomyr.

Tehnix, a leading Croatian equipment manufacturer and an MBH-T technology developer (mechanical, biological, and heat treatment, and recycling solid household waste), was selected as project-implementation contractor. Tehnix provides recycling for around 95% of the solid household waste, preventing the creation of more landfills in the country. Tehnix has successfully built and commissioned more than 50 similar plants in EU countries, where, like in Ukraine, waste is not sorted at home.

“Our technology provides stable SHW management without forming new landfills. The plants are economically independent, handle solid waste without environmental pollution, and use existing logistics for SHW collection and transportation. Our plants are compact, only require a small area for their placement, and the technology is patent protected," said Stepan Mikulchich, Director of the Tehnix Office in Ukraine.
